The Maha Mrityunjaya Yagya is a special Yagna/Yagya/Havan to Lord Shiva. This MahaMritunjay Yagya is performed to ensure a long and healthy life. This is also performed to bring an end to prolonged or severe sickness, as well as for many other difficulties in life. By tradition is also suggested to alleviate the malefic influence of Mangal (Mars) or Shani (Saturn) when certain astrological combinations are there in the Jyotish chart/horoscope. Maha Mrityunjaya Yagna is performed to keep away from premature death and increase longevity.
